Before Harry Smith and Francis Child,
Stephen Foster and W.C. Handy, Johnson and Jolson, before Franklin and Edison, Bach and
Beethoven, folks got by alright. They played music for themselves and
their friends. A few even got paid. There were no critics to say that
their music wasn't confessional enough or was too derivative or not varied
enough in tempo or key, or it lacked sophistication. I'm sure they played
pretty good. |
